### MAP UPDATE JULY 1, 2023 ###
A new 3d Terrain Viewer app has been added for exploring this LIDAR-based imagery. While viewing any map of the mid-Atlantic region in the desktop boydsmaps web app, click the button with the blue cube to create an animated 3d model of the terrain. You can then use five slider controls to change 3d rendering parameters and observe the effects in realtime. Choose from five different styles and 6 map resolutions. All combined, these tools are a powerful way to study the terrain and reveal features that aren't visble on a static, two-dimensional map.
The introduction of the terrain viewer revealed many flaws in the boydsmaps elevation dataset that weren't previously visible. As a result, the entire dataset was re-processed from almost two terabytes of source files into nine million RGB Mapbox elevation tiles, eliminating the errors in the old dataset. This update also greatly improves 3d views in the main boydsmaps web app as well as providing a more accurate elevation readout.
An expansion of the map coverage area is also currently in progress. Full coverage of New York, Massachussets, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine is coming later in 2023!

MAP DESCRIPTION
Three dimensional high-resolution LIDAR-based monochrome terrain covering the US Mid Atlantic region, created using Digital Elevation Model (DEM) data from a variety of sources. Most of the map consists of bare-earth LIDAR at a horizontal resolution of 1.2 meters (~4 feet).
Includes full coverage of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Connecticut and Rhode Island with partial coverage of Virginia, West Virginia, New York and Massachussets - over 500 gb of data and 20 million map tiles. Includes full coverage of major Eastern cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Washington, Baltimore, Hartford, Wilmington, Pittsburgh and others.
Tilt, rotate, drag and zoom the map in three dimensions for realistic views of the terrain. LIDAR penetrates the tree canopy to reveal details on the ground that aren't visible on aerial imagery, such as foundations of buildings that no longer exist or roads that are grown-over. The LIDAR elevation is shown in a realtime heads-up display as you move around the map. (Tip: if you prefer a two-dimensional North-up map view, just click the compass.)
