This download contains a Garmin POI file with the locations and descriptions of Geodetic Control Points in Montana and Idaho. If you want to give your Garmin GPS unit a true test of accuracy you can find one of the Geodetic Control Points in this database and see how your unit stacks up. Geodetic Control Points are precisely located positions and are often given a physical description (brass cap, iron pipe, aluminum cap, marked stone, etc.). Some points even have elevation data so you can check your elevation accuracy as well. Simply search the POI database for a control point near you and navigate to and locate the control point on the ground with the included physical description.

Locate the physical feature, stand on it, and see how far away your calculated position is to the true position of the control point. This will give you a reasonable measure of accuracy.
