If you are like me, you enjoy a ride on Amtrak. If you have ever used your GPS on Amtrak, you know railroad tracks only show to the 800 ft zoom. So I have 2 things I made from some shapefiles (forget where I found them) to make your trip more fun.
1) Amtrak.img This is not to install into MapSource and is for units that support multiple map names. Simply take the file and save it in your Garmin directory on your GPS or Card. (when you enable/disable it, it will show up as something like gpsmapper and list Amtrak). It will show a thin black line for the Amtrak route to about the 20 mile zoom. It is transparent so it will show on top of your other maps.
2) Amtrak.gpx. You can open it in MapSource, it will take MapSource about 5 minutes to open it and it will look like it is locked up while you wait. When it opens, you will find countless tracks that are segments of the Amtrak routes. If you want to load a track onto your GPS and follow it on your route, select the segments of your route in mapsource (hold the ctrl key while you select the tracks with your mouse) select copy and wait for 5 minutes or so while MapSource acts like it is loacked up. Open up another copy of MapSource and paste the tracks into it. Then use the track join tool to join the tracks and then send the joined track tool. You may be able to acomplish this better with other software, but this does work. You can also open it in GoogleEarth.
