Last year, I was asked to create a Garmin map from public available data - shapefiles etc. This was successful and I have now applied the code to data from USGS, NHD and USFS along with selected data from Open Street Map. The resulting map has more topographic detail than others I have seen - but it is not routable nor with an elevation model.

But I want feedback, please! Tell me what you like, what you don't and what is missing.


The map is in .gmap format. Unzip the download and on a MAC open with the Garmin Map Manager; on a PC copy to C:\ProgramData\Garmin\Maps\ . The map can then be opened in Basecamp and downloaded to a GPS unit.
