Crane Swamp, Westborough, MA 01581

Don't let the name fool you. This area is centered on the broad Crane Swamp - headwaters for the Sudbury River - but with over 2,225 acres of open space, there are plenty of hiking trails without having to slosh through the swamp. With parcels in four different towns (Westborough, Southborough, Marlborough, and Northborough (isn't it funny that Southborough is east of Northborough and Westborough is south of Southborough? I digress...)), the open space is under the direction of many different entities, including the Sudbury Valley Trustees. The Crane Swamp area includes Westborough State Hospital (now closed), Walnut Hill, Cedar Hill, and the Sawink Farm.

Of particular interest is the Walnut Hill (or Carroll) Water Treatment Plant, which treats all of the drinking water for the city of Boston and many Boston suburbs. This treatment plant is located at the northern end of the Crane Swamp. More information on the treatment plant is at these links:

Screenshots

This KMZ map is set to Draw Order 32 so it will show 'beneath' your primary map on your Garmin KMZ-compatible GPS.

Note that due to the wide coverage area of this map, it is actually 4 tiles. Keep that in mind when placing this on your Garmin GPSr - even though this is one KMZ, the number of tiles is limited to 100 across all the KMZ files loaded on your GPS.

The image on the left is from a Garmin GPSMAP 78sc with no other maps displayed. The image on the right is from the same device with the Garmin 24K NE series TOPO maps displayed.
