Russian Military Mapping
As a world superpower, the Soviet military initiated an unprecedented worldwide mapping effort to cover the entire globe. World-class topographic mapping has been a natural concern for Russia throughout its history, supporting the defense of its homeland as well as the expansion of its empire. The mapping became available after the break up of the Soviet Union. Large scales maps would be the best choice for the parts of the world where no better locally produced mapping is available.
Dating from the seventies through the nineties and produced at scales from 1:1,000,000 to 1:100,000 and 1:50,000 scales still represent the best accessible coverage for many countries.
A unique feature characterizing Russian mapping is its uniformity in terms of indexing system, geodetic parameters and symbolization rules. All maps are published in Gauss-Kruger conformal projection using Pulkovo 1942 datum on Krassovsky 1940 ellipsoid. The standards for symbolization were established more than fifty years ago and incorporate more features than any other mapping in the world. Some map series especially at 1:100,000 and 1:50,000 scale include information about terrain and transportation network conditions.
1:1,000,000 Scale
The 1:1,000,000 map is designed for strategic mission planning, organization of troop coordination and control, general planning for joint air-ground operations and for intelligence briefings. The maps contain cartographic data such as: populated places, transportation networks, hydrography, and vegetation.

1:500,000 Scale
The 1:500,000 maps are designed for studying and assessing the general nature of terrain in the preparation and conduct of operations. They are used in organizing troop coordination and control, for navigation during troop movements and targeting, and for depicting common operation picture of the battlefield. The maps are also used for joint air-ground operations and for Air Force pre-flight mission planning. As of today the series represent the largest scale available complete unified world coverage.

1:200,000 Scale
The 1:200,000 map is designed for terrain study and assessment, and is the main map for controlling troops in formations. It is widely used as a road map, since it clearly and fairly accurately depicts the road network and suitability for the movement of combat and other vehicles. In addition to roads, the map depicts the general topography, the principal water barriers, major timber stands, and populated places well, so it is used to study the off-road passability, protective and camouflage properties of the terrain. It is also often used for aircraft navigation.

1:100,000 Scale
The 1:100,000 scale map is used by the ground forces, and designed for studying terrain and assessing tactical properties in planning combat operations, in organizing troop coordination and control in large formations, in performing orientation and targeting, topographic referencing of elements of troop orders of battle, and determining the coordinates of enemy objects and targets. It is used in the design of military engineering structures and execution of activities in the engineering equipment of terrain.

1:50,000 Scale
The 1:50,000 scale maps are the base topographic maps used on the lowest tactical level. The product is designed for detailed study and assessment of terrain, navigation, and targeting. It is used by ground forces in various types of combat, especially in the organization of defense. In an offensive, it is used to study and assess the terrain in breaking through enemy defenses, crossing water barriers, making airborne and amphibious landings, in executing combat operations on urbanized terrain.

City Graphic
City Graphics are created for the territories of cities, major rail hubs, naval bases, and other important built-up areas and their surroundings. The maps are designed for detailed study of cities and their approaches and for orientation, performance of precise measurements, and warfare in urban environment. These maps are made at 1:10,000 and 1:25,000 scales.
